ERW process fundamentals

ERW tube production joins the strip edges by applying high-frequency electrical current to the abutting edges and forging them together under pressure. Key process segments include:

Coil pay-off and strip conditioning: Decoilers, levellers and tension loops stabilize the strip before forming. Clean, deburred edges favor consistent welding.

Forming: Progressive roll stands gradually form the strip into a tube blank with a tight seam gap suitable for resistance heating.

·Welding power control: Solid-state power supplies with feedback on current and voltage maintain consistent heat input.

·Mechanical synchronization: Servo drives and VFDs coordinate forming, welding and cutting speeds to prevent seam defects.

·Tension and strip tracking: Load cells and optical guides keep the strip centered and tensioned for uniform weld formation.

·Data logging: Recording weld parameters, NDT results and production counts enables traceability and process troubleshooting.


Inspection and defect management

Common inspection systems include inline ultrasonic testing for volumetric flaws, eddy-current for surface irregularities, and laser/optical gauges for dimensional monitoring. When defects are detected, automatic rejection stations divert non-conforming lengths to scrap conveyors, preserving downstream productivity.
